Florida Man Negligently Shoots Self In Leg After “Holding A Firearm While Driving”

DORAL, FLORIDA — A 21-year-old shot himself in the leg while driving down the highway, and he was apparently holding the firearm at the time.

Maybe it was an Instagram moment gone wrong, who knows. Is there ever a reason to have your firearm in your hand while you’re driving? Not unless there’s a deadly threat.

According to troopers, Alex Gomez Avila, 21, was holding a firearm while driving a white 2017 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck. Troopers said Avila mishandled the weapon and accidentally discharged it.

As a result, troopers said Avila suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his right leg.

He was transported to the hospital and received treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

No matter how many times an article or news report call something like this an accident, it’s always going to be negligence. There is no safe way to handle a firearm while you’re driving, and you’d be stupid to do so.

Let’s hope this young man learned a valuable lesson after all of this, and know to keep his firearm holstered or otherwise secured.
