GILCHRIST COUNTY, FLORIDA — An armed homeowner shot and killed a convicted sex offender after he broke into his home. The homeowner was also shot in the shoulder but is expected to survive. The incident happened as a Blue Alert went out to Florida residents after an officer was shot 3 times during a traffic stop.

The Blue Alert was issued after TCSO Deputy Troy Anderson was shot three times during a traffic stop on U.S. 19 South approximately six miles south of Salem around 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Anderson was flown to a Gainesville hospital where he’s being treated for gunshot wounds to his jaw, neck and hand, according to a family member.

The suspect, identified as 33-year-old Gregory Miedema, was convicted in 2011 for possession of child pornography and ‘intercourse with a minor’.

Miedema entered the home Wednesday morning and was confronted by the armed homeowner. The two exchanged shots and Miedema was hit three times. When police arrived, they found Miedema dead.

Police located Miedema’s vehicle and found what they believe to be strategically placed firearms in an apparent ambush attempt. Luckily, he wasn’t able to carry out any plans, because this armed homeowner was able to take out the trash.
