AUGUSTA, MAINE — Are you seeing a trend like I am? Two gun control groups, Mom’s Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and Everytown for Gun Safety, have released TV, radio and digital ads Thursday that say the proposal would put Maine people at risk. The proposed bill, LD 652, would allow Maine residents to carry concealed firearms without the need for a permit.
The groups point out that Vermont, just two states over and allows permitless concealed carry, is like the wild west on steroids that is nothing but chaos.
No, they didn’t really say that, because it’s so far from the truth.
The TV ad (video below) says the bill would allow people with no training, “even violent criminals,” to carry concealed weapons in public.
Fear, Fear, FEAR!! The truth is, criminals aren’t allowed to carry firearms anyway, and that’s not something that would change under this bill. If a criminal wants to carry a firearm, they are going to carry a firearm regardless. The definition of a criminal tells us that they don’t follow the law. Duh.
But even with a law such as the proposed, if a bad guy was carrying and found to be carrying, they’d still be arrested. Just like now.
As far as allowing “people with no training” to carry a firearm, many states are already like that and do not have any issues. Furthermore, since starting Concealed Nation, it is my overwhelming realization that most firearm owners will seek out training themselves, and they tend to practice as often as they can.
So, is permitless carry a concern? Not so much. Just ask Alaska. And Arizona. And Arkansas. And Kansas. And Vermont. And Wyoming. And maybe-soon-to-be South Carolina.
