KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI — On Wednesday, an incident involving a shooting occurred at Crown Center, a popular shopping mall in Kansas City. During this incident, a security staff member and a bystander both discharged firearms. The authorities have identified these individuals and are working with them in their ongoing investigation.

The situation unfolded around 5:45 p.m. on January 17, when emergency services received multiple 911 calls reporting gunshots at the mall. The police found two injured individuals in the food court on the lower level, and four other victims later reached a hospital in a private vehicle. All victims are recuperating from non-fatal injuries.

The police detained several people at the scene on Wednesday. One individual was initially held for a 24-hour investigative period but has since been released, as informed by Sgt. Jake Becchina, a spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD).

Sgt. Becchina indicated that detectives are collaborating with prosecutors, sharing findings as the investigation progresses. The initial investigation suggests that the shooting resulted from a verbal dispute between two groups, likely comprising young people or individuals in their late teens to early 20s. This confrontation escalated into gunfire, resulting in six people getting wounded and causing damage to nearby businesses.

Sgt. Becchina has called for public assistance, urging anyone with relevant information or who witnessed the event to come forward. This can be done anonymously through the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS. The appeal is part of an effort to identify and apprehend those involved in the incident.
