SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA — A deadly shooting in Spartanburg County is under investigation after an altercation escalated, leaving one man dead, reports Lt. Kevin Bobo. Deputies were called to a residence on Long Branch Road on Friday evening and found Joshua Lee Waters, 47, with gunshot injuries.

Despite immediate aid and subsequent hospital treatment, Waters succumbed to his wounds.

Initial inquiries indicate that the incident followed a heated exchange at a gathering where alcohol was consumed. The homeowner, claiming self-defense, allegedly shot Waters after repeated attempts to remove him from the property failed and the confrontation turned physical.

Authorities have conducted interviews with witnesses and the homeowner; however, no charges have been filed as the investigation continues.

While this incident plays out, let’s be reminded of the fact that alcohol and firearms never mix. While the full details of this incident aren’t yet known to the public, it can be tricky navigation when alcohol is involved.
