Houston Woman Defensively Shoots Allegedly Abusive Boyfriend

Published

HOUSTON, TX – A Houston woman is claiming self-defense after she shot and killed her boyfriend. The boyfriend was allegedly abusive toward the woman, and the case is being referred to a grand jury.

The incident occurred Thursday August 11, 2022 in the north Houston suburb of Cypress Station where Harris County Sherriff’s Office deputies responded to the shooting around 5:45 p.m. The victim of the shooting was identified as 26-year-old Odarrius Broden and was declared dead on the scene. Broden’s body was found lying on the apartment’s front porch bleeding from his head.

Allegedly, the apartment belonged to the girlfriend. Broden arrived and the two engaged in an argument. Then she claims he physically assaulted her, kicked him out of the apartment, but he forced his way back in by shattering the door frame.

The girlfriend then fired a warning shot as the argument continued, eventually leading to a second fatal shot. Investigators are reviewing footage from the apartment complex and the woman was cooperative with the investigators and law enforcement.

According to CrimeGrade.org, the area of Harris County where the incident took place has received an “F” grade for violent crime per capita.

Violent crime has become so rampant, the City of Houston launched a “One Safe Houston” initiative which facilitated a “gun buyback” event at the end of last month to attempt to curb crime. However, since One Safe Houston launched in February, Houston’s homicide rate is up.
