Man Trespassing at Apartment Complex Fatally Shot by Resident

BIG SPRING, TEXAS – A man who violated a criminal trespass warning by showing up at an apartment complex was shot and killed by a resident who he got into an altercation with.  Officers of the Big Spring Police Department were dispatched to a reported gunshot victim at the Barcelona Apartments, located at 578 Westover Road, at 9:30 a.m. on the morning of January 21st.

Police arrived to find a man suffering a gunshot wound to the abdomen, and the man died at the scene from his injuries.  He has been identified as Terrance Ali Young, 32. He had been issued a Criminal Trespass Warning for the apartment earlier in the morning.

When he arrived at the complex, he reportedly banged on the door of the apartment. A resident of a neighboring apartment came out and asked Young to leave.  The two got into an altercation, and the neighbor shot Young.  The neighbor was cooperative with detectives investigating the incident and was not detained following questioning. The Texas Rangers are assisting the Big Spring Police Department with the investigation.

Criminal trespass can be a Class A or B misdemeanor, depending upon the circumstances. In this case, which involved a residential habitation, it would likely have been elevated to Class A, which can carry up to a year in jail, a $4,000 fine, or both. The trespasser won’t have to worry about either now, since he chose to pick a fight with someone who was prepared to defend themselves with deadly force.
