Robber, Who Just Killed Victim, Is Immediately Shot And Killed Himself By Armed Witness

BATON ROUGE, LOUSIANA — A strange sequence of events resulted in both the victim and the suspect being killed following a robbery on Friday, November 20th. The incident occurred at Wise Communications, located at 2629 South Sherwood Forest Boulevard, near Interstate 12.

According to Baton Rouge Police spokesperson Sgt. L’Jean McKneely Jr., responding officers arrived on the scene to find two males dead from apparent gunshot wounds. Their investigation revealed that Timothy McCoy, 28, robbed and then fatally shot Wise Communications owner Mahmod Khalaf, 48. Neighbors say that Wise, which sells cell phones, service plans and repairs broken devices, had been in business since the dial pager era.

They also recovered surveillance video which showed McCoy leaving the store and being pursued by a third person, who produced a gun and shot McCoy a short distance from the business.

At a Monday morning press conference, BRPD Deputy Chief Troy Lawrence said that the second shooter “did an awesome job” in taking down McCoy, adding that it was unclear if the second shooting was justified or if the shooter could possibly be facing charges. “He stood up for this community during that incident, which is something that’s hard to do,” said Lawrence. Referring to the man as both a “person of interest” as well as a Good Samaritan, he added, “If you’re watching, please come talk to us.”

Following the televised press conference, the third person turned himself into police on Monday. He was identified only as a 20-year-old male, who told authorities that he had witnessed the shooting and then shot McCoy as he fled the business following the armed robbery and fatal shooting of Khalaf. He was released following questioning. The case remains under investigation by the Baton Rouge Police Department.

Five people were killed on Friday in Baton Rouge, making 103 homicides in the parish during 2020. The jurisdiction is on track for a record-setting homicide rate, a trend being seen across the country this year.
