RAYMONDVILLE, TX — A man’s brother found himself in a world of hurt when he invaded the man’s home early this month.
What’s more, he did so in defiance of a protective order — and we all know just how effective a piece of paper those can be.
I hope you can catch the sarcasm. As the Valley Morning Star reports:
Willacy County Sheriff Larry Spence declined to disclose the man’s name. Spence said the man’s brother apparently shot him after the two exchanged gunfire at about 6:30 a.m. today in the family home off FM 186 west of Raymondville. The man used a key to enter the home after his family filed a protective order to keep him out of the house, Spence said.
“He was going from room to room,” Spence said.
Spence said the man’s brother shot him twice.
“He claims he saw him raise a rifle barrel,” Spence said of the brother’s account of the shooting. At about noon, the man was awaiting surgery at a hospital.
I don’t know what kind of family feud spawned a restraining order, brother against brother, and I don’t really want to know. If I were to guess, however, whatever this was happened in pretty quick succession.
The clue here, of course, is the mode of entry. The brother had a key.
Of course, there are a great many people who have keys to their relatives’ places, but one would think that should the conflict between the two parties be so great as to provoke a restraining order that the homeowner would also take the time to change out the locks if he had a few days to think about it and to do so.
Things can break down fast.
