GREENSBORO, NC — A harrowing day for one of North Carolina’s largest cities saw a staggering three homicides in less than seven hours, all of which seem to be completely unrelated.
The News and Record reports that deaths of that number in that time haven’t happened in a long, long time.
“I don’t recall anything in that frequency of time in my career,” said Greensboro Police Chief Wayne Scott according to the News and Record, who has reportedly served as a police officer in Greensboro for 26 years. “And hopefully we never see it again.”
As the News and Record reports: “Police are still looking for the crime scene of the first shooting. Officers responded about 4:20 p.m. Thursday to Moses Cone Hospital after 25-year-old James Will Johnson of Greensboro arrived with a gunshot wound. He was later pronounced dead.”
Things only got worse from there.
“About 8:45 p.m., police were dispatched to the 3100 block of Utah Place on a shots-fired call and found 37-year-old Larry Wayne Pratt of Greensboro dead with a gunshot wound to the head.”
It was referred to as a “homicide” by the News and Record, so it’s fairly safe to assume that this was not a self-inflicted wound.
The report continues:
“A report of yet another shooting led police to the A&T campus about 11:30 p.m. Detectives learned a woman visiting the university was approached by a man with a gun in the parking lot of Pride Hall at 410 N. Benbow Road. As the two fought in the parking lot, the man’s gun fired, police said. The woman escaped with minor injuries and the gunman fled.
“Moments after talking with the woman in the lobby of the dormitory, officers found Kimeko D. James, 25, of Greensboro clinging to life inside a vehicle in the parking lot.”
Rescuers fought valiantly to save James, but James was pronounced dead at the hospital.
How many of those could have been avoided if the victims in each of these incidents had been legally armed?
There would be more people walking today if more people chose to be responsibly armed.
