Texas Teen Killed During Alleged Robbery After Man Fires in Self-Defense

Police in Carrollton, Texas say a 16 year old boy was shot and killed after he allegedly pulled a firearm during a robbery setup and the 20 year old he met with fired in self defense. Several teens now face aggravated robbery charges, while the shooter has not been charged in the boy’s death as the investigation continues.

CARROLLTON, TX (3 minute read) — Police say a planned robbery involving several teenagers ended with a 16 year old boy shot and later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Investigators report that the group drove to meet a 20 year old man under the cover of a drug deal, but the encounter turned violent when the teen allegedly pulled a firearm, prompting the older man to fire in what he told officers was self defense.

Shortly after 7 pm, North Texas Emergency Communications received a call about a firearm related incident in the 2200 block of Heads Lane in Carrollton. A separate caller, a distressed mother, soon reported that her 16 year old son had been shot and needed medical attention. He was rushed to Carrollton Regional Hospital, where he later died.

According to police, the teen had arrived with two 17 year old boys, identified by officers as John Avila and Markellin Soto, and two 15 year old girls. Investigators say the group came to meet 20 year old Adan Sandoval under what they call a fake plan to sell illegal substances, with the real intention of robbing him.

Texas Self Defense Shooting During Alleged Teen Robbery

Detectives say that during the meeting, the 16 year old pulled out a firearm. At that moment, Sandoval fired, telling investigators he shot in self defense. In many states, including Texas, self defense laws can protect someone who reasonably believes they face an immediate threat of serious harm. Whether that standard is met is decided by investigators, prosecutors, and sometimes a jury, not by the person on the scene.

Police say Avila, Soto, and one of the 15 year old girls now face aggravated robbery charges. As of the most recent update in the case, officers reported that Sandoval had not been charged in connection with the teen’s death, though the investigation remains active.

For lawful gun owners, this case is a stark reminder that any meeting tied to illegal activity is extremely dangerous. Bringing a firearm into a criminal plan often magnifies the risk, especially when minors are involved and emotions are high. Even when a shot may be legally justified, everyone involved must live with the outcome.

Safety Tip: If you choose to carry a firearm, avoid any illegal activity, meet strangers only in safe, public locations, and make sure every responsible person in your home understands basic firearm safety and local self defense laws.
