Concealed Carry Reciprocity Map

Planning to carry across state lines? Start by checking how your destination treats the permits you hold. Concealed Nation’s concealed carry reciprocity map lets you explore permit recognition across all 50 states and Washington, D.C., with a separate view for constitutional or permitless carry.

Choose your residence and permits, then select a destination to read its conditions and sources. A recognition result does not establish that you personally qualify to carry or that carrying is allowed in a particular location.

How to read these maps

Permit recognition and permitless carry are separate questions. A colored state is a summary of the recorded rule, not a determination that you can legally carry. Age, residency, permit type, prohibited places and other conditions may apply.

“Recognition reported” means the available source lists a selected permit as recognized. “Check permit conditions” means a permit class, issue date, age rule or other condition needs attention. “Not confirmed” means the available information does not establish an answer; it is not the same as a prohibition.

The constitutional / permitless carry view describes general provisions for adults. It does not determine personal eligibility or cover every limited carry exception.

Self-defense maps summarize recorded classifications. Statutes, case law, the location and the facts all matter. Read the state notes and primary sources.

Verify before carrying. Laws and court orders change. Confirm the current law with official sources. These maps provide general information, not legal advice or a guarantee of eligibility.

How to use the reciprocity map

  1. Select your state of residence. Check the resident-permit box only if you hold a valid permit from that state.
  2. Add any nonresident permits you hold. You can also enter your age to help identify general age restrictions.
  3. Choose Permit recognition to explore how destinations treat your selected permits, or Constitutional / permitless carry to review that separate carry option.
  4. Select a state on the map or search for it by name. Read the result, conditions, source links, and review dates before relying on the summary.

What concealed carry reciprocity means

Reciprocity concerns whether one jurisdiction recognizes another jurisdiction’s carry permit. Recognition can depend on the issuing state, whether the permit is resident or nonresident, the permit class, and the holder’s age. One state’s recognition of your permit does not establish that your home state recognizes its permits in return.

For example, the North Dakota Attorney General’s reciprocity guidance distinguishes between license classes and warns that some destinations restrict nonresident licenses. Check the destination’s requirements for your exact permit.

Reciprocity and permitless carry are separate questions

A state may allow eligible people to carry without a permit while applying separate rules to outside permits. Permitless carry in your home state does not establish permission to carry in another state. Your destination’s law controls that question.

The map keeps these two views separate so you can review each basis for carrying. A permitless result still requires attention to age, residency, eligibility, and location restrictions. Maine’s concealed-carry statute, for example, sets out distinct provisions for permitless carry and recognition of a resident permit from another state.

Understanding your results

  • Recognition reported: The available information identifies a recognition match for at least one selected permit. Read every applicable condition.
  • Check permit conditions: A restriction or additional question needs attention, such as permit class, age, or a locally issued permit.
  • Not recognized: The selected permit does not qualify under the recorded recognition rule. This result does not decide whether a separate permitless provision applies.
  • Not confirmed: The available information does not establish the answer. This is neither permission to carry nor a finding that carrying is prohibited.

Concealed carry reciprocity FAQ

Does a recognized permit let me carry everywhere in that state?

No. Permit recognition is only one part of the question. Check prohibited places, vehicle rules, identification requirements, and other applicable state, local, and federal restrictions before carrying.

Will a nonresident permit work the same way as a resident permit?

Not necessarily. A destination may distinguish between them or recognize only certain permit classes. Add the permit you actually hold and read the destination’s conditions.

Can I use this map if I do not have a permit?

Yes. Use the constitutional / permitless carry view to explore recorded general provisions. An unconfirmed result means you need additional official guidance; it does not answer whether you qualify.

How current is the information?

The map displays an information-update date, source-review dates, and review coverage. Those dates describe the recorded work on the information; they do not mean every rule has been fully verified. Check each state’s notes and current official sources, especially before travel.
