Child Finds Gun On Couch, Shoots Self In Hand While Negligent Gun Owner Distracted By Football Game

MIAMI, FLORIDA — A 3-year-old girl, Serenity, accidentally shot herself in the finger with a handgun left unattended by her relative, Orlando Young, in Florida. The incident occurred while Young was distracted by a football game. The child was immediately taken to a local hospital in Miami and later transferred to another facility for hand surgery.

Young, 23, who was responsible for supervising Serenity, has been arrested and charged with child neglect resulting in bodily harm. Reportedly, he left his firearm unattended due to excitement over a touchdown during a football game, only to realize the mishap when he heard the gun go off and saw Serenity injured.

Home surveillance footage revealed Serenity approaching and firing the weapon, while Young was absorbed in his laptop. Another child and a disabled family member were present during the incident, but they were unharmed.

Serenity’s grandmother, Robin Fuller, who was absent at the time, called 911 upon learning about the incident, vowing to never allow her grandchildren back to the scene of the accident. “I don’t want them over there ever again,” she said.

Young is due in court soon and may face additional charges related to a separate altercation with an inmate. Meanwhile, Serenity has been released from the hospital and is recuperating at home under her mother’s care, reportedly in good spirits.
