Armed Homeowner Shoots And Kills Attacking Intruder

RAPID CITY, SOUTH DAKOTA – A 34-year-old man is dead following a shooting incident that occurred during the evening hours on Sunday, March 27.

The incident occurred around 10 p.m. when the Custer County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about a shooting. A male resident in the Pass Creek Road area said he had shot an intruder that was allegedly attacking him.

CCSO deputies responded to the scene along with EMS. The man who was shot was pronounced dead on the scene.

Deputies say Marty Mechaley, the homeowner who shot the intruder, has been cooperative with law enforcement.

The CCSO said the name of the the alleged intruder has not yet been released, as next of kin notification will take place in the coming days.

According to authorities, no arrests have been made following the incident. They say the incident is under investigation between the sheriff’s office and the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation.
