Man Shot and Killed in Self-Defense During Domestic Dispute, Woman Also Unintentionally Shot

ALBION, MICHIGAN – An apparent domestic disagreement over a woman led to one man fatally shooting another in an apparent case of self-defense Saturday morning.

According to Scott Kip, Albion Director of Public Safety, police were called to the apartment in the 100 block of West Porter Street to deal with a man attempting to kick open a door.

Upon arrival, officers discovered that the 22-year-old suspect had already left.  The apartment was occupied by his ex-girlfriend and a 24-year-old man and no one was injured, so officers left the scene.

However, the man returned within a half-hour and began kicking the door again and was allegedly armed with a gun. At that point, the man inside the apartment shot the suspect, and in the process also accidentally shot the woman. The suspect died, and the woman was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Officers did interview the shooter and believe that it may be a case of self-defense in a domestic dispute.  The investigation is continuing, and the report will be sent to the Calhoun County Prosecutor for review.
