Just hours ago, an armed man walked up to two NYPD officers sitting in their patrol car and opened fire. One officer was killed and the other was taken to the hospital. The condition of the officer taken to the hospital is unknown.

The shooting took place near Myrtle and Tompkins Avenues in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

After the shooting, the gunman ran into a busy subway station and was found with a gunshot, apparently self-inflicted.

Just two miles away from the scene, the NYPD was holding a gun buyback program today at Mt. Sion Baptist Church, according to their Twitter account.

According to The New York Times, the last officer killed by gunfire in the line of duty was Peter Figoski in 2011.

This story is developing.
