Jones did not attempt to make any purchases; instead, he demanded access to a restricted area of the store. “He never tried to buy anything. All he said was ‘I want in the back,’” Capt. Cole explained. Jones then revealed an empty holster before pulling out what appeared to be a pocket knife.
Witnesses described the weapon as a folding knife. At that moment, two customers, who were legally carrying firearms, drew their pistols and took action to subdue Jones. “These other customers were armed. They drew their pistols. Someone called the police,” Cole stated. “Everybody was told to get out of the store once they drew their guns and held them on the bad guy.”
The situation was quickly contained as officers from the Marble Falls Police Department, Granite Shoals Police Department, and the Burnet County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene. The officers took witness statements and transported Jones to the Burnet County Jail. He faces two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one charge of making a terroristic threat. He is being held on surety bonds totaling $110,000.
In the aftermath of the incident, Verizon employees shut down the store for the remainder of the day to process the events and ensure the safety of the staff and customers.
This event underscores the significance of self-defense and the critical role of responsible firearm carry. Situational awareness and preparedness can prevent potential tragedies, as demonstrated by the swift actions of the armed citizens who subdued the suspect.
Safety Tip: Always be aware of your surroundings and have a plan for self-defense. If you choose to carry a firearm, ensure you are trained and understand the laws and responsibilities involved.
