Bystander Shoots And Kills Suspect Who Fatally Stabbed Officer

EL PASO, TEXAS — On Sunday, Las Cruces Police Department Officer Jonah Hernandez tragically passed away after being stabbed while responding to a trespassing call. The incident occurred in the 300 block of South Valley Drive near Amador Avenue at approximately 5 p.m. Hernandez was a two-year veteran of the force, originally from El Paso.

The assailant, a 29-year-old man whose identity remains undisclosed, was reportedly shot and killed by an onlooker who witnessed the altercation. This bystander utilized Hernandez’s radio to alert authorities for assistance. Subsequently, Hernandez was swiftly transported to Mountain View Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Hernandez leaves behind a wife and two sons. His death marks the first line-of-duty death in the Las Cruces Police Department’s history. The community and the department mourn the loss of Officer Hernandez, remembering his dedication and service.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham released a statement on Hernandez’s untimely passing:

“I am horrified to hear of the murder of a young officer in Las Cruces last night. Officer Hernandez was, by all accounts, a dedicated and brave public servant and an outstanding son, husband and father.

“I am praying for Officer Hernandez’s wife, his two sons, his friends and family, his colleagues at the Las Cruces Police Department, and the Las Cruces community as they grieve his sudden and terrible loss. This loss is felt acutely by every first responder and their families, who selflessly serve and protect New Mexicans every day.

“Officer Hernandez, thank you for your service.”
