Attempted Home Invasion In NY Ends With An Injured Homeowner And Deceased Intruder

ILION, NEW YORK — A local school was placed on lock-down after a reported shooting took place in the near vicinity. When Ilion police arrived at the residence, they found one intruder dead outside. It is believed that the occupant of the home successfully defended himself from the intruder through the use of a firearm.

“What we know right now is that it was a robbery attempt and the suspect entered the home, and the homeowner was able to shoot the suspect,” Ilion Police Chief Tim Parisi said to WKTV.

Police eventually identified the deceased suspect as Dasean Chastine, 24, of Kennedy Plaza in Utica. The homeowner took some damage to his head during the confrontation but was treated for injuries on site and released. This case is being treated as a self-defense incident.

While we commonly regard New York as an anti-gun state, there is a huge difference between New York City politics and upstate New York. In these areas, gun ownership is widely treated in a different fashion than in the five burroughs. That, however, has not translated to a decrease in criminal activity as criminals are under the assumption that occupants of a home are unwilling or unable to defend themselves against brute force.

That assumption didn’t pay out so well for Chastine. Another young man cut down because he took up the wrong profession. However, it’s pretty clear that if Chastine had not been shot, he would have continued to beat that occupant about the head — likely causing serious or maybe even fatal injury. All for what? All so he could take that man’s possessions and feel on top of the world for a couple days?

Well, that play doesn’t work out when you have homeowners who refuse to be victims. By owning a gun and having that gun accessible in the home, you’re able to fight back when bad guys kick in the front door. It doesn’t take an abnormal act of heroism to fight back. It just takes a little preparation.

It’s better to get treated for some minor head wounds and be alive than to have some thug parading around with your stuff in the streets and you’re unconscious or dead in your own living room. That’s not heroism — that’s just wanting to be alive.

Don’t be a hero, be a survivor. Carry a gun every single day — especially in the home.
