SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH — A resident in an apartment complex decided to go outside when he heard an argument in the courtyard area. It was a bad idea.
The man, who has a concealed carry permit, apparently got in the middle of something gang related.
“They then took offense to our resident and ended up firing rounds at him. He is a concealed carry holder and returned fire,” Salt Lake City Police Lt. Dave Cracroft said.
The man was shot in the shoulder and taken to the hospital. It is not known if any of his return fire struck anyone involved.
I’m not quite sure how to classify this incident. It’s not “Guns Saving Lives”, because the resident shouldn’t have gone outside to investigate in the first place, IMHO. If something is going down, why not park it inside and dial 911? Entering a hostile environment with a firearm is usually never a good idea.
If you insist on investigating, you’d better be doing it from a safe distance. I’m not sure how close this man got, or if anything was said, but he was definitely picked out by the men involved in the argument. Something must have happened to get to the point of shots being fired in the resident’s direction, no?
What would you have done?
