Homeowner Shoots, Kills Intruder Who Kicked Down Back Door

A homeowner in Scott City, Missouri, shot and killed an intruder during a home invasion, with local police confirming the act was in self-defense. The burglar later died at a hospital.


SCOTT CITY, MO (2-minute read) — A Scott City man was fatally shot after breaking into a local residence in a suspected burglary attempt. The homeowner, who was inside at the time, defended himself by shooting the intruder when the back door was forcibly opened. The suspect later succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital.

The Scott City Police Department received the emergency call at 2:43 p.m. on Saturday, August 24. The homeowner reported the break-in, explaining that he shot the burglar after the man kicked in the door. Officers responded quickly, meeting with the homeowner, who directed them to the injured intruder.

Upon arrival, the officers attempted life-saving measures, supported by first responders from the Scott City Fire Department. Despite their efforts, the burglar, identified as Jason L. Vermillion, was declared dead shortly after being transported to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

According to the police, the homeowner had been inside the house when he heard the intruder forcefully enter through the backdoor. Acting in self-defense, the homeowner used a handgun to protect himself and his property. Local authorities thoroughly processed the crime scene and classified the case as a homicide investigation.

However, after a detailed investigation, the police determined that the homeowner was within his rights to defend himself and his property, and no charges are currently being pursued.
