Concealed Carrier Shoots Armed Suspect During His Second Carjacking Attempt

HAMPTON, VIRGINIA — Police say that Kenneth Maddox, Jr., a 22-year-old from York County, was hospitalized with critical injuries after being shot by an armed citizen during a series of carjackings in Hampton. Maddox faces charges including two counts of carjacking and firearm use in felony crimes. The events unfolded on November 25th, starting around 3:30 a.m. when a 37-year-old man reported being carjacked at gunpoint in the 3300 block of Commander Shepard Boulevard. Police later found this vehicle near the 1600 block of Hardy Cash Drive.

A second carjacking was reported just after 5 a.m. on Marcella Road. Here, a 29-year-old man, sitting in his car, was approached by Maddox who demanded the vehicle at gunpoint. An altercation led to the armed citizen shooting Maddox. Shortly after, Maddox arrived at Sentara CarePlex Hospital with life-threatening gunshot wounds, and police quickly linked him to the carjackings. The vehicle from this second incident was later discovered in the 2000 block of North Armistead Avenue.

The suspect’s luck eventually ran out, running into someone who was ready and willing to defend themselves. It’s bound to happen eventually, and while we hope we’re never in a situation like this, it’s a reminder to always stay prepared.
