Man Shoots Attacker After Reportedly Being Struck With Axe

BELLAIRE, OHIO — Police are probing a domestic event from early Monday near 41st and Noble Streets where gunshots were reported. On arrival, officers discovered that a man had been allegedly assaulted with an axe.

In self-defense, that man reportedly shot his attacker. Michael Hummel, 47, from New Philadelphia, Ohio, sustained injuries from the altercation and was hospitalized. Another individual, Joseph James, whose details weren’t fully disclosed, was admitted with a gunshot injury. An unnamed Bellaire woman was also hospitalized.

The incident remains under investigation by the police.
