Armed Citizen Stops Mall Shooting Suspect In El Paso, Texas; 1 Dead And 2 Injured

EL PASO, TEXAS — A suspect was shot by an armed citizen after police say he opened fire on a group of people at a mall following a confrontation. The suspect killed 1 and injured 2 others before being shot and successfully stopped by the legally armed citizen.

That citizen has been identified as 32-year-old Emanuel Duran.

The El Paso Police Department said the confrontation eventually escalated into a “physical fight,” and the 16-year-old pulled out a handgun, fatally shooting Angeles Zaragoza, 17, and injuring another 17-year-old and 15-year-old.

After the suspect fired shots, he began to run and pointed his gun towards other people, including Duran. That’s when Duran drew his handgun and fired, striking the 16-year-old suspect.

An off-duty police officer came to the scene and helped Duran give aid to those who were shot, including the suspect.

During the investigation, police learned that at least two other legally armed citizens were at or near the scene during the incident but were not involved.
