How Often Should You Clean Your Concealed Carry Handgun?

How often should you clean your every day carry handgun?

In a perfect world, each of us is cleaning our concealed carry firearm when we wake up every morning, all throughout the day, and one last time right before we tuck into bed at night.

That’s not how the world works. Here’s how often we should be cleaning our concealed carry handguns in real life.

How often should I clean it?

Let’s get the obvious out of the way – ideally, we’re cleaning our guns every time we go to the range, and we’re going to the range so frequently that it makes any supplementary cleaning irrelevant.

If you’re able to live that life, I salute you.

Most people don’t have the time and/or funding to be running to the range that often, and that’s OK.

While formal and informal training is critical to responsible concealed carry, there are times where it just doesn’t happen.

So, if you’re hitting the range, be sure to take the time afterward to field-strip your firearm and give it the attention it deserves.

If you’re not, you still have to clean your gun from to time. Everyday carry breeds natural buildup that can include dirt, lint, and even rust. No one needs that.

As a personal rule, I always recommend cleaning all carried guns once a month, and even checking stored guns to make sure that nothing has somehow gone awry.

Give it a field-strip, scrub, and re-lube. If you see something building before that, don’t wait!

Like almost everything else in life, problems get worse the more they’re ignored.

Buildup is inevitable, and you’ll want to learn to love cleaning if you can. The more you do it, the better you’ll become at it!

What about a deep clean?

A field-strip doesn’t break a firearm down completely. Concealed Nation’s founder Brandon Curtis recommends cleaning a firearm all the way down to the studs at least once a year.

This is a more complicated procedure. If you aren’t familiar with the inner workings of a firearm, many gunsmiths will offer this cleaning as a service you can purchase. Remember to shop local if you can!

A clean handgun’s a happy handgun. It’s also a safe handgun, and an active protection of an investment you made.

Take the time to maintain your firearms as if your life depended on it.
