WINNEMUCCA, NEVADA — The Winnemucca (Nevada) Police Department responded to a report of shots fired at the Maverik First-Stop Gas Station at 605 W Haskell at 12:26 AM on Sunday, August 21, 2022. Upon their arrival, officers found a 16-year-old male shot. Officers immediately began life-saving measures on the 16-year-old.

The teen was transported to Humboldt General Hospital, where he died from his wounds.

A 19-year-old male on the scene at Haskell and Hanson admitted to shooting the 16-year-old, claiming he fired in self-defense. He alleged that the 16-year-old attacked him with a knife, so he drew a firearm and shot him to stop the attack. Witness statements confirmed that the 16-year-old attacked the 19-year-old with a knife and additional evidence gathered at the scene appear to confirm this claim. The 19-year-old and other witnesses are cooperating with the investigation.

Police at the scene stated, “The preliminary investigation shows that this was an act of self-defense.”

Police have not released the identities of either male involved.

Detective Jones of the Winnemucca Police Department is investigating the shooting.
