Robbery Suspect Shot By Concealed Carrying Convenience Store Clerk During Assault

MIRAMAR, FLORIDA – A convenience store clerk shot a man who physically assaulted him during an attempted robbery Tuesday evening. Miramar police say the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. at the Sunoco located at 7520 Pembroke Road.

Police arrived on the scene to find the clerk who had been attacked by an alleged robbery suspect. Officers were able to review video surveillance footage from the store, which shows the suspect, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, behind the counter striking the clerk multiple times.

During the attack, the two fell to the floor, where the suspect continued to beat the clerk. During the altercation, the clerk is seen reaching behind his back and pulling a handgun from his waistband. He was able to fire several rounds at his attacker in self-defense.

Following the shooting, the suspect was able to flee the scene on foot.  Officers were later able to locate him lying on the ground approximately a mile from the scene. Miramar Fire-Rescue responded to that location, where they provided treatment to the man and transported him to Memorial Regional Hospital. There he underwent surgery and is expected to recover, according to authorities.

Police have identified the suspect as Jeffrey John Philippe, 33. He has been charged with burglary and battery and will be jailed following his release from the medical facility. Police say the shooting was a case of self-defense and that the clerk, who has a concealed weapons permit, will not be charged.
