KERSHAW COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA — A Kershaw man was shot by his father in self-defense, according to investigators with the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies say that the incident occurred on Sunday, February 12th at a home in the rural community of Lugoff, about 110 miles inland from the coastal cities of Charleston and Myrtle Beach.
The KCSO received a 911 call around 11:00 am from a man who said that his father shot him in the leg during a physical altercation. Responding deputies arrived on the scene and found the caller conscious and alert. He was transported to a hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to his leg but left before being discharged.
Investigators determined that the father fired in self-defense during the altercation, which occurred between the two men because of an earlier incident between the son and his mother. In that incident, which reportedly took place on Saturday night, the son allegedly assaulted his mother.
After leaving the hospital, the son, 36-year-old Joshua Corey, was located and arrested by deputies in neighboring Richland County, which borders Kershaw County to the southeast. RCSO deputies then turned Corey over to Kershaw County deputies.
Once back in Kershaw County, deputies charged him with second-degree assault and battery for the incident involving his mother that occurred on Saturday night. Kershaw County authorities have not said if either the mother or father were injured in the incidents of Saturday night and Sunday morning; however, they did say that the suspect does need mental health assistance.
