He laid down on his gun and made sure the bad guys didn’t know it was there. He distracted them and intentionally sent their attention to something else. Then, when he saw the window, he took the opportunity to draw and fire, successfully stopping the assault and robbery.
This incident has a lot of great points and shows them clearly. If he happened to be carrying strong side, his gun likely would have been located by the bad guys.
