Twenty-four-year-old Javier Manuel Plata was apparently one of those exes who couldn’t let go. On Wednesday he tried to force his way into the home of his 33-year-old ex. According to police, Plata had been texting the woman all day Wednesday and he was waiting for her when she got home.

She asked him to leave and he reportedly did. But not for long. That proved to be a bad decision.

According to KSAT, he came back later that night and discovered that she had the locks changed. That’s when he tried to force his way in through a window.

According to police, the woman was in the bathroom when she heard the Plata walking up the stairs and went to grab her shotgun. Moments later, she opened fire on her ex as he entered the bathroom.

Plata died later at a local hospital.

No one knows what Plata planned to do once he got into the woman’s home and fortunately, she’ll never have to find out. The woman had the means at hand to defend herself against someone who was probably larger and stronger. That’s a decision that more and more Americans are making for themselves every single day.
