Shootout In Front Of Blood Bank Leaves Both Armed Attacker And Defender Shot

GARY, INDIANA — What caused this shootout to happen is not entirely known. Police have been able to identify an attacker, and victim. Both men were armed, and when the attacker pounced, our armed defender shot back.

Around 3 p.m. Friday police were called to a shooting at the corner of 15th and Broadway in front of a blood and plasma donation center, Gary Police Department Lt. Thomas Pawlak said.

Two men were shooting at each other, and both suffered gunshot wounds. One of the men ended up near the White Castle at 1304 Broadway and another went to a Gary hospital, Pawlak said.

Police said of the men was the aggressor and the other was acting in self-defense.

Jediah Perry, of Gary, was charged with battery by means of a deadly weapon, aggravated battery when the assault poses substantial risk of death and carrying a handgun without a license, according to Lake Superior Court records.

The victim was shot in the back and arm and was airlifted to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Illinois. His current condition is unknown.

Perry was shot in the right arm and was grazed by a bullet on his rib cage, Pawlak said. He was released from the hospital and was taken into police custody.

The Breakdown:

Police were called to a scene of two men engaged in a shootout. When they arrived, they found both men to be suffering from gunshot wounds. A quick investigation allowed police to determine who was the aggressor, and who was acting in self defense. Again, no mention of what caused the attack, but a clear attacker and victim were established.

The attacker, Jediah Perry, suffered gunshot wounds to his right arm and rib cage. He was carrying a handgun without a license. The unnamed armed defender suffered more critical injuries. He was shot in the back and arm. His injuries required him to be airlifted to a nearby hospital.

Perry was arrested for numerous crimes including carrying without a license and battery with a deadly weapon.

The Bad:

Well, we’ve obviously identified Perry as the bad guy in all of this. He initiated this fight as the aggressor. However, let’s also point out that Perry is the poster child for groups like Bloomberg or Moms. He is the irresponsible gun owner. He carries a firearm without a license to carry, and uses it to commit crimes.

We have no idea if Perry has a criminal past. The report did not mentioned that he was charged with illegal possession of a gun, so we can guess that he owned the gun legally. Yet, who knows if he purchased legally? Not following the most basic gun laws only serves as fuel to the anti-gun machine in this country.

The Good:

Our unnamed defender is the spotlight of this article. He, unlike Perry, legally carried a concealed firearm. When he was attacked, he used the gun to defend himself. As we’ve said many times before, when you draw your gun in defense, you must be prepared for the consequences. Although he escaped the scene with his life, our armed defender paid a steep price.

He wasn’t going to be a victim, and he wasn’t going to go down without a fight. In the process of fighting back he sustained some serious injuries. However, he also managed to land hits on his attacker. His attacker was left wounded for the police to snatch up when they arrived.

Our armed defender stood his ground and used his carry gun to defend himself. He did everything within the bounds of the law and refused to be a victim. We wish him a speedy and full recovery.
