Car Thief Caught and Held at Gunpoint By Homeowner

Published

FORTH WORTH, TEXAS — A burgler in the Fort Worth area of Texas learned a hard lesson when he tried to steal a truck outside of a home. Instead of getting away with the truck, he met an armed homeowner who held him at gunpoint until the police arrived.

A 53-year-old armed homeowner caught a suspected burglar early Wednesday after hearing someone breaking into his truck near his Fort Worth home, police said. The homeowner held the suspect at gunpoint until patrol officers arrived. No injuries were reported in the incident.

A couple of great things from this story. First off, the bad guy didn’t get away. Secondly, we have a responsible gun owner who stopped a crime without any injuries occurring in the process. Too many times movies and television show a robber being shot and killed while trying to steal property.

The loss of property does not equate to using deadly force, especially if your life isn’t in danger. Shooting at someone to prevent them from stealing your car will likely end up with you being arrested. The homeowner here showed good restraint and legal understanding of using deadly force. Holding the bad guy at gun point until the police arrived was the best option – for everyone involved.
