BARBOURVILLE, KENTUCKY — The parents of a 1st grader and kindergartener are facing charges of endangering the welfare of a minor after their sons got a hold of two handguns –one of them loaded– and brought them to school.
The boys apparently thought that the guns were toys, and were caught with the handguns when another child alerted a teacher to their presence.
Even worse, the school bus driver is facing charges of not reporting the handguns to school officials after he reportedly knew that they were in the boys backpacks. He has pleaded not guilty.
It’s pointless for me to speculate how the boys were able to get their hands on the guns, because there had to be some obvious neglect for this to happen.
As adults, we have a duty to protect children and to make sure that they don’t have access to things like firearms. Adults failed these children not once, but apparently twice; the parents failed with not providing proper storage of their firearms, and the bus driver failed with his supposed inability to report the incident to anyone.
SMH. We’re better than this.
