Amid a rising crime wave in Philadelphia, Jim’s West Steaks & Hoagies, a recently reopened Philly cheesesteak restaurant, has taken the step of hiring armed security to ensure the safety of its patrons and staff. Victoria Wylie, co-owner of the establishment, expressed her proactive approach, emphasizing prevention over reaction. She wants patrons to be assured that their safety is a top priority.
Recent data from the Philadelphia Police Department reveals a concerning uptick in crime. Over the past two years, the city has seen over 500 homicides, and there’s been a 16% increase in overall crime. Especially troubling to the West Philadelphia community, where Jim’s West Steaks & Hoagies is located, is the prevalence of crime in the area. This was a factor in the restaurant’s decision to be vigilant about safety, particularly with the establishment’s popularity drawing crowds.
Highlighting the importance of this measure, an Instagram video showcased an armed security guard stationed outside the restaurant on its reopening day on September 9. Wylie confirmed that these guards would be present during all business hours. The decision for such security was also influenced by an incident in 2015, where the previous owners of Jim’s Steaks faced an armed robbery.
While property crimes in the city saw a 30% increase in 2022, armed robberies have dipped by 13%. However, this rate remains elevated compared to pre-pandemic numbers. Recent incidents include multiple businesses being looted in September, prompting the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board to temporarily shutter 48 retail stores in the city.
Despite these challenges, Wylie remains undeterred. She aims to balance safety with serving beloved cheesesteaks to the community, ensuring that the crime surge doesn’t overshadow her business.
