A new ordinance was proposed in Los Angeles this past Friday. The ordinance would require gun owners in the city of Los Angeles to store their firearms in locked containers or apply the trigger locks when not in use. This ordinance was modeled after a law that was passed in the San Francisco area.
Currently, the California state law only requires that safety locks be included with the guns when they are manufactured, sold, or transferred. Additionally, the current law does not require that guns be disabled with a trigger lock or stored in a locked container when not in use.
Councilman Paul Krekorian authored this proposal. The measure was taken in acknowledgement of Women Against Gun Violence’s TALK Project. Krekorian stated that about 68% of school shootings used a firearm that was taken from home. He said,
“It is critical for Los Angeles to lead on this issue. Requiring gun owners to lock up their firearms and store them safely will prevent needless accidents and tragedies. This sensible step will keep our schools and children safe.”
Is anyone else thinking what I’m thinking? How would this law be enforced? It seems like officials have some details to work out before this possibly goes into effect.
The proposal is coming out just a few weeks after 17-year-old brought a loaded handgun to Will Rogers High School in Van Nuys, with the mother being charged for her son’s actions.
