MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA — In the Willard-Hay neighborhood of north Minneapolis, a man was fatally shot during an attempted carjacking on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred around 3:37 p.m. in an alley near Golden Valley Road and Russell Avenue North. According to Police Chief Brian O’Hara, two armed individuals approached a Mercedes SUV in the alley and opened fire. One assailant was found shot on the scene and later pronounced dead. The other was apprehended by police in the vicinity.

The driver of the Mercedes, who was also shot, managed to drive himself to North Memorial Health Hospital. His current condition remains unknown. A 2-year-old child in the car was unharmed and is now with relatives.

Investigators are still determining the source of the fatal gunshot. It’s suspected that the driver of the Mercedes might have been armed and fired back in self-defense. Police have recovered two firearms, believed to be owned by the attackers. Chief O’Hara expressed relief that the child in the vehicle was not injured, considering the proximity of the shooting.
