CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — Two people, Mansfield Wallace and Tabitha Hemphill, have been charged with breaking into an 80-year-old man’s home and assaulting him in the Far Northwest Side of Chicago.

Wallace has been charged with one count of home invasion and two counts of aggravated battery, while Hemphill has been charged with one count of felony home invasion, according to CBS News.

The victim, who is a licensed gun owner, shot Wallace during the attack, after which both suspects fled to Resurrection Hospital.

The victim also suffered multiple injuries and was taken to the same hospital. The gun was later found under the driver’s seat of the Hyundai the suspects were driving.

During their bond hearing, Wallace’s bail was set at $500,000, while Hemphill was ordered without bail as she was on probation at the time of the crime.

The attack has rattled the neighborhood, but many residents are relieved that the victim was able to defend himself.

“I am really heartbroken for him and the family, because he was at home alone and he must’ve been really scared when it happened,” an anonymous woman said according to CBS.

“You never know if someone’s going to come to help you in time, so this could’ve ended really badly.”

The victim has been described as a friendly, quiet, and reserved person.
