KENTON COUNTY, KY — A burglary suspect was shot in Ludlow after advancing on a homeowner confronted him.
The incident occurred shortly before 5 am on December 5th, WXIX reported. The suspect, identified as Damon Hammons, was burglarizing several vehicles in the area, as well as attempting to burglarize a house.
According to Kenton County Commonwealth Attorney Rob Sanders, Hammons was in the process of burglarizing a car when he was confronted by a homeowner in the area.
The homeowner told Hammons that he had called police and was armed. Hammons told the homeowner he was not afraid of him and came at the homeowner. Fearing for his safety, the homeowner fired at Hammons, striking him in the neck, according to Sanders.
“When this person, who we can only describe as a criminal, keeps coming towards him, I think it was completely reasonable for the homeowner to fire in self-defense,” Sanders said of the incident.
Hammons’ acts were partially caught on surveillance cameras.
Hammons calls for help at one point in the video footage.
The homeowner who shot Hammons was not identified and Sanders said that he would not face charges as the shooting appeared to be a case of self-defense. Hammons was released from the hospital and is expected to be charged in the burglaries.
