Muncie Police Investigating Fatal Shooting As Possible Self-Defense

MUNCIE, INDIANA — Muncie police are investigating the fatal shooting of a local man early Monday, October 24th, on the city’s south side.

Police were dispatched to the 1900 block of West Memorial Drive at 12:17 a.m. and found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to Ball Memorial Hospital, where he later died. He was identified as 56-year-old Daniel Eugene Dunsmore.

Another person, who reportedly claimed responsibility for the shooting, quickly surrendered to police. Law enforcement stayed on the scene for more than six hours.

At approximately 10:45am, Police Chief Nate Sloan provided a short release. The release states, “Those involved in the incident were detained, the matter is currently under investigation.” He added, “and there is no active threat to public safety.”

As of Monday afternoon, no one had been booked into the Delaware County jail. Detectives were reportedly investigating reports the shooting had been in self defense.
