ADAMS RUN, SOUTH CAROLINA — A homeowner in his 60s shot a man who broke into his residence on Sept. 3, 2022.

Charleston County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) say that a man is recovering at a hospital after being shot while breaking into a home on Saturday. Deputies responded to a home in Adams Run around 3:30 a.m. EDT for a report of a home invasion.

Upon arrival, deputies found a man lying inside of the home near the front door. According to CCSO, the suspect shattered a glass window in the front door of the home before climbing into the opening.

The homeowner fired a gun in self-defense, hitting the intruder’s left arm. The wound was not life-threatening.

Police identified the suspect as Lawrence Butler Jr., of Adams Run. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The 37-year-old Butler told detectives he was at a party, where he took drugs and drank alcohol, shortly before breaking into the home. Authorities said they found a small bag of cocaine while searching Butler.

Butler was subsequently booked into the County jail on charges for first-degree burglary and cocaine possession.

CCSO spokesman Andrew Knapp said the homeowner and his wife were not hurt. No charges for the homeowner are expected.
