Woman Shot In The Eye While Looking Through Peephole On Her Apartment Door

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK — I won’t lie, this has been an irrational fear of mine for a few years. Irrational because it’ll never happen, until it does. A camera outside the front door goes a long way.

The New York City Police Department confirmed to PEOPLE that a 37-year-old woman heard a knock on the door of her Upper West Side apartment at around 7:40 pm Monday night. She was shot in the left eye when she looked through the peephole.

The woman was rushed to the hospital where she is in stable condition. According to a neighbor, the woman has been a resident of the apartment building for 18 years, and nothing like this has ever happened there before.

“There was a shot, and then the woman was screaming. It was a single shot,” a neighbor told reporters. “She screamed, ‘Call 911! Call 911!’ It’s crazy. Nothing like this has happened in this building.”

“She has twin boys who just turned 1 year old,” the neighbor said. “She’s a security guard, and she doesn’t mix with other people out here. She’s a good woman, a very good woman. She goes to work and takes care of her kids.”

I try not to live a paranoid life, but I do have things in place that allow me to not open my front door while still seeing who is out there and possibly what their intentions are. With that kind of technology, like a well-placed camera, it allows us to be just a little bit safer in an increasingly unsafe world.

The police have not yet arrested any suspect.
