Home Invasion Suspect Shot by Resident After Breaking Into Apartment

Published

GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN – An apartment dweller shot an intruder in self-defense early Thursday morning after the suspect’s first break-in attempt failed. Interim Green Bay Police Chief Jim Runge said that officers were called to a home on Mount Mary Drive where someone was attempting to kick in the front door.

The suspect was unsuccessful and had fled the scene when officers arrived, but they then received a call for a shooting just around the corner in the 1000 block of Laverne Drive. They found the suspect with a gunshot wound which he received after breaking into a duplex through the back door. The resident was armed with a handgun and confronted the man, who then charged and attempted to grab the firearm. He was rewarded for his efforts with a single gunshot wound.

The man, identified by GBPD only as a 31-year-old from the area, was transported to a local hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries. His motive was unclear, and it is believed that he may have been under the influence of something. Investigators are trying to determine if the two calls are related and will forward their findings to the District Attorney’s Office for charges.
