LAS VEGAS, NV (3-minute read) — In the early hours of August 3, 2023, a terrifying incident unfolded at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas when 25-year-old Shayne Sussman launched a brutal attack on two resort employees. According to witnesses and court documents, Sussman appeared erratic and violent, reportedly growling like an animal before being shot by a security officer.

The ordeal began around 1 a.m. when Sussman allegedly stabbed two workers, severely injuring them. One employee, who was polishing the floor, was caught off guard when Sussman charged at him, stabbing him in the face and neck. The second victim, a resort employee walking down a hallway at the end of his shift, was also attacked and stabbed in the back.

Surveillance footage from the resort shows Sussman stumbling around the hotel lobby just moments before the attacks. Court documents reveal that Sussman seemed to be waiting for an opportunity to strike, eventually rushing toward the first employee “out of nowhere.” One of the victims described the encounter as terrifying, stating that Sussman “growled like a bear” during the assault.

After the stabbings, Sussman briefly left the area, only to return to the casino where he sat outside a restaurant, still clutching the bloody knife. Security officers, who were on high alert due to an earlier concert on the property, approached Sussman. One officer recalled Sussman complaining that his heart was racing, all while still holding the knife. Staff later reported that Sussman appeared to be under the influence of substances, confirmed by tests showing both alcohol and THC in his system.

Despite being confronted by security, Sussman fled through the casino when officers approached. Footage captured Sussman lunging at officers with the knife, narrowly missing one of them. As he continued to flee, one officer fired a single shot, bringing the situation to an end.

Sussman now faces serious charges, including three counts of attempted murder. As of the latest reports, he remains in custody with a $500,000 bail, and his arraignment has been postponed until October 15.

This disturbing incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictability of violent encounters and the importance of preparedness. Casino staff and security were fortunate to have an increased security presence due to the concert, which may have prevented further injuries. Quick actions by security personnel likely saved lives, underlining the importance of security protocols and training in large venues like resorts.

Safety Tip: Always remain aware of your surroundings in public spaces. If you see suspicious behavior, report it immediately to security or law enforcement. In cases where firearms are used for self-defense, ensure proper training and legal understanding of your local laws regarding use of force.
