CARMICHAEL, CA (4-minute read) — A man was shot and killed Sunday morning after Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies reported he forced his way into a home and assaulted his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend in their Carmichael apartment. The incident occurred on the 5900 block of Sutter Avenue in the Sutter Crossing apartments.

According to Sgt. Amar Gandhi, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, the man, identified as the ex-boyfriend, knocked loudly on the door for about 20 minutes before the woman opened it.

Upon entering, the ex-boyfriend confronted and attacked the current boyfriend. As revealed by 911 dispatch records reviewed by The Sacramento Bee, the male resident called for emergency assistance just before 2 a.m., reporting that the intruder had choked him. In response, the resident retrieved his registered firearm from under his pillow and fired a single shot at the intruder, then immediately called 911.

Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District personnel arrived shortly after deputies and pronounced the man dead at the scene. The Sheriff’s Office’s investigation concluded that the shooting was an act of self-defense. The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office reviewed the findings and decided not to file any criminal charges against the shooter.

This event underscores the importance of understanding self-defense laws and responsible firearm ownership.

Safety Tip: Always have a plan for personal protection and understand your local laws regarding self-defense and firearm use. Maintaining situational awareness and securing your home can prevent such unfortunate incidents.
