Deadline For New York State Pistol Permit Recertification Is Today For Many People

New York residents possessing concealed carry pistol permits must undergo recertification with the state police by the end of the month due to the Concealed Carry Improvement Act (CCIA) enacted last year. This requirement, part of the CCIA’s provisions, necessitates permit holders to recertify with the New York State Police before the specified date, followed by subsequent recertifications every three years thereafter. The CCIA, a response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s nullification of New York’s long-standing concealed carry laws, introduced stricter conditions.

Previously, recertification was mandatory every five years; however, the CCIA’s implementation has shortened the interval. The recertification process has transitioned to an exclusively online format, replacing paper submissions that were previously accepted. The online form is accessible at https://firearms.troopers.ny.gov/pprecert/welcome.faces, requiring applicants to have their state ID card, permit form, and an inventory of their licensed pistols and revolvers at hand. Troubleshooting for application-related issues can be sought through a dedicated helpline at 1-855-529-4867.

The majority of concealed carry permit holders must complete their recertification by August 31. Nonetheless, individuals obtaining permits from June 2022 onwards will have until June 2025 to fulfill this requirement. These adjustments to pistol permit recertification stem from the modifications implemented in 2022, following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the prior restrictive law, which limited concealed carry licenses to those with demonstrable self-protection necessity.
