FLORIDA CITY, FLORIDA — A fatal shooting at a Florida City Walmart resulted in one person’s death and another injured, while also leaving a number of individuals in distress. The incident happened shortly before 3 p.m. on Wednesday at the store on 33501 S. Dixie Highway. Miami-Dade Police have assumed control of the investigation.

In addition to the two individuals who suffered gunshot injuries, one person experienced a panic attack, and a woman self-admitted to the hospital after sustaining a head injury from a fall during the chaos. Paramedics also treated five individuals at the scene for minor injuries.

According to Detective Alvaro Zabaleta, the shooting was the result of an altercation between two groups, each consisting of three individuals. During the physical confrontation, one person drew a gun, wounding two people. The surviving victim, believed to be a bystander hit by a stray bullet, was taken to Jackson South Medical Center in stable condition. The second victim, involved in the fight, later died at the hospital after being airlifted.

Witness accounts and cellphone footage captured the panic inside the Walmart, with shots ringing out and customers fleeing for safety. The scene was secured by Florida City Police, Homestead Police, and MDPD units, who cordoned off the area.

It took authorities approximately 45 minutes to evacuate the Walmart. The police have taken one person into custody, but four others potentially involved have fled. The investigation is ongoing.
