BEAUMONT, TEXAS — A 43-year-old man, identified as Jason Omar Cruz, is recovering in a hospital after sustaining injuries from a gunshot wound during a reported burglary attempt. The incident occurred in the early hours on Friday in the North End of Beaumont. Beaumont Police officers were dispatched to a residential property on Wildwood Avenue following reports of an ongoing break-in.

Prior to police arrival, the homeowner had reportedly shot Cruz, who was found inside the house. Surveillance footage from a neighbor’s security system captured the scene as law enforcement arrived to respond to the incident. The neighbor expressed surprise at the event, stating the community was typically quiet and peaceful.

Upon arrival, officers found Cruz in critical condition on the bathroom floor. Quick action from the officers, who applied a tourniquet, likely saved his life. Cruz was subsequently transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive.

The homeowner will face no charges for the shooting, with Beaumont Police clarifying that the individual acted within the scope of Texas law.

Following the incident, police secured a warrant for Cruz’s arrest on charges of burglary of a habitation. He remains in the hospital as of now but will be transferred to Jefferson County Jail upon recovery. Cruz’s bail has been set at $100,000 as per a release from the Beaumont Police Department.
