TUCSON, ARIZONA — A DEA agent and two police officers were shot during a routine inspection when a man they approached pulled out a gun and began shooting. The DEA agent was killed during the shootout, and one of the suspects was found dead in a bathroom. A second suspect was taken into custody.
[Tucson Police Chief Chris] Magnus said the Counter Narcotics Alliance, a task force comprised of local and federal law enforcement agencies, boarded a New Orleans-bound Amtrak train stopped at a station in downtown Tucson around 8 a.m. to do a routine check for illegal guns, drugs, money, and other items.

While officers were speaking with a person on the second level of the train, another person close by opened fire. A gunfight ensued and went on for some time between officers and the gunman.
Footage was captured below that shows an officer running into the train when he heard gunshots, and then quickly retreat as he began to take fire from the suspect.
The seriously injured DEA agent and Tucson police officer were taken to a hospital. The police officer was in stable condition and is being held overnight for observation, Magnus said.
There is no word yet as to what prompted the suspect to begin firing on the officers.
My heartfelt condolences are with the loved ones and colleagues of the DEA agent who lost his life today in Tucson. Two other law enforcement officers are injured in the hospital. Our prayers are with them, their families and the law enforcement community.

On board at the time were 11 crew members and 137 passengers, all of which were uninjured.
Amtrak does not allow passengers to carry firearms on the train, but they are able to have them in checked bags. The only people who can carry firearms on the trains, aside from law enforcement, are criminals. That’s because they don’t follow the law.
