MACON, GEORGIA — A man is dead after he broke into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment and began fighting with her.  According to a press release from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, the fighting and subsequent shooting took place just before 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

The statement said that a 31-year-old man “had gone to the address in the 3600 block of Dawn Street where his ex-girlfriend lives and gotten into a physical altercation with her, after busting a window and kicking in the front door.”

During the fight, another man intervened, and the two men started fighting. The other man was reportedly the victim’s sister’s boyfriend. During the mano e mano contest, the 31-year-old was allegedly shot while struggling over a gun. He was pronounced dead at the scene by personnel from the Macon-Bibb Coroner’s Office, and was later identified as Anthony Benard Burke of Macon.

Burke had active warrants for battery and criminal damage to property related to a prior incident with his ex-girlfriend at the same location. No one else was injured and no charges have been filed against anyone.

The BCSO said that the incident is still under investigation.
