Why We Carry: Woman Uses Hammer to Attack Man Before Shooting Him

Published

WOODBRIDGE, VIRGINIA — A woman weaponized a hammer, then used a handgun to wound a man early on Wednesday, October 28th.

Police were dispatched at 1:03 a.m. to Bayvue Apartments, located at 1293 Bayside Avenue, for a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, they found a 34-year-old man with a gunshot wound.  He was transported to a hospital with injuries that were not thought to be life threatening.

Officers learned that the victim was involved in a verbal disagreement with a woman that then turned into a physical altercation and assault. The woman struck the man in the head with a hammer before pulling a gun and shooting him in the upper body, according to Prince William County police spokeswoman Renee Carr.

Yessica Asencia, 29, of the 1400 block of Bayside Avenue, was charged with two counts of malicious wounding. It is not known if the woman was the registered owner of the firearm, or if she was authorized to carry it.

This serves as a reminder that almost anything can be weaponized, and it is not uncommon for hammers or other blunt objects to be the first weapon of choice in chance encounters or escalating verbal disagreements that turn violent and often deadly. What is uncommon is for the victim to be assaulted with a makeshift weapon AND shot by the same assailant.

Remember: No one is coming to save you, and the best defense you can have is something that’s with you at the time you need it.
